About CRIME STOPPERS

Our History

The CRIME STOPPERS concept started in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1976. A teen was shot and killed during a robbery. Weeks of investigation turned up no clues, and no one who saw the incident offered information or assistance.

Police could not offer rewards for anonymous information so a community board was formed that raised money for a reward fund. The media stepped up, got the word out about the reward, and presented a reenactment of the crime that resulted in a case-solving tip the very next day. Additionally, 4-5 other violent crimes were solved as a result of the tips that were called in.

The CRIME STOPPERS concept of partnering with law enforcement, the media and concerned citizens was a success! Chapters soon sprung up around the U.S. and internationally.

Rochester Area CRIME STOPPERS was formed in 1983 as a 501 c 3 non-profit by a group of local business owners, in partnership with the media and representatives of law enforcement, all dedicated to keeping our community safe. CRIME STOPPERS is governed by an all-volunteer board that meets monthly to determine reward payouts; identify funding opportunities; and develop strategic marketing and fundraising goals. While there are no paid salaries, the Board of Directors is actively involved with contributing their “time, treasure and talent” to ensure that the CRIME STOPPERS programs and services continue to benefit our community and reach a wider audience every day.
